Deutsches Museum is preparing for a future exhibition a small mechanical tide calculator built in the 1930s in Germany. It is a rare instrument in the history of science, about which very little documentation exists to date. It is believed that the device was used for military applications and is currently on permanent loan and on future display at the Deutsches Museum. The interaction of the mechanical components, particularly the tidal gears, is of special scientific interest. The goal of this thesis is to document and analyze the internal structure and functioning of the tide calculator using non-destructive 3D computed tomography (CT). This study aims to identify mechanical assemblies from CT data, reconstruct their kinematic relationships, and understand the calculator’s operating principle. Depending on the thesis's focus, aspects such as image processing, segmentation, mechanical reconstruction, or digital simulation of the gear mechanism may be emphasized. This thesis combines research into historical technology with state-of-the-art measurement methods to subject a unique exhibit to a scientific, non-destructive examination.
