Initial Situation

At the Professorship of Laser-based Additive Manufacturing, we conduct research on innovative process strategies, methods, and systems in the field of metal additive manufacturing. Our focus lies on the process Laser-based Powder Bed Fusion of Metals (PBF-LB/M), in which thin layers of metal powder are selectively melted by a laser, building up parts layer by layer. Different laser beam shapes and their influence on key process characteristics are investigated. Inline monitoring – using Optical Tomography (OT) and a multispectral camera (MSI) – plays a significant role in process observation and control.

Objective and Scope of the Thesis

The objective of this thesis is to correlate the signatures of OT and MSI on an EOS M290 FLX for various geometries. The main goal is the transfer of monitoring signatures between different beam shapes; a secondary goal is the correlation with local part properties (e.g. density or surface quality). 

The thesis comprises the following work packages:

  1. Literature review on OT, MSI, and beam shaping in PBF-LB/M
  2. Integration and calibration of monitoring equipment
  3. Experimental planning, sample design, and execution of experiments on the EOS M290 FLX 
  4. Data preparation as well as optical and metallographic analysis of the samples
  5. Correlation of the signatures with each other and with local part properties, transfer between beam shapes
  6. Evaluation and documentation of the results

You will be part of a student team of 3-4 members working together on closely related research questions. Each member conducts an independent thesis with regular exchange within the team.
