Background
Wheel–rail systems are widely used in industrial material-handling equipment, including stacker cranes, overhead and gantry cranes, rail-guided transfer vehicles, and port handling machinery. Wear of the running wheels can lead to increased maintenance costs, reduced positioning accuracy, and unplanned equipment downtime.
Most established methods for modelling and predicting wheel–rail wear originate from railway engineering. However, industrial rail guided equipment differs considerably from railway vehicles. Typical characteristics include low to moderate operating speeds, frequent acceleration, braking and reversing, changing load distributions and structural deformation. It is therefore unclear to what extent existing railway-based contact and wear models can be transferred directly to industrial applications.
The aim of this thesis is to conduct a structured literature review of existing review articles and representative research studies on wheel–rail wear prediction. Based on the identified literature, the applicability and transferability of existing modelling and validation approaches to stacker cranes and related industrial equipment will be assessed. The work will also identify research gaps and potential topics for a future scientific review article.
Methodology
- Conduct a structured literature search on recent review articles concerning wheel-rail wear modelling, testing, prediction, and profile evolution
- Identify representative research studies on stacker cranes, overhead and gantry cranes, rail-guided transfer vehicles, and other industrial wheel–rail systems
- Compare the operating and structural characteristics of railway vehicles and industrial rail-guided equipment
- Identify insufficiently addressed topics and derive potential research gaps
- Prepare a structured literature database and a preliminary review proposal
- Voraussetzungen
- Studies in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, materials engineering, industrial engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Strong interest in scientific literature re search and technical writing
- Independent, systematic, and structured working style
- Ability to critically analyses and compare scientific publications
