MOTIVATION
Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) still faces a lot of challenges despite the success and technological achievements within the last few years. One of the core problems is the field of safety and safe operation. It has to be ensured that the AV operate safely under all condition, even when their perception of the environment is uncertain (e. g. due to bad weather, sensor noise, or unusual traffic situations). Safe decision making is therefore difficult to solve. To tackle this, different use cases has to be defined and modeled to validate a uncertainty aware system.
In this project, you will contribute to cutting-edge research on safe autonomous driving, focusing on how an AV should adapt its behavior, especially when confidence in perception or prediction is reduced.
Your main task will be to design, implement, and evaluate driving scenarios that explicitly introduce uncertainty into the AV stack. Using the CARLA simulator together with the open source software stack Autoware, you will create urban and highway scenarios including adverse weather, partial sensor degradation, ambiguous obstacles, or unpredictable traffic participants. You will then systematically test and compare vehicle behavior with and without an uncertainty-aware safety module, and analyze metrics such as safety, number of stops, driving efficiency, and robustness.
